In short: Yes. Japan is one of the 100 countries in the Simsalasim plan. You get unlimited data there for 10 € a month, with no roaming surcharge and no local SIM card.

What you get in Japan

Whether Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka: your mobile data is unlimited, for navigation, translation, train apps, streaming and social media. There is no allowance to use up, no daily rate and no travel package to book in advance. The plan behaves in Japan exactly as it does at home.

  • Unlimited data in Japan, included in the plan at 10 € a month.
  • No roaming surcharge and no per-day billing.
  • Nothing to unlock country by country.
  • No local SIM card, no airport kiosk, no ID check on arrival.

Calls and texts: the part worth reading

This is where it pays to look closely, because data and calling work differently. Data depends on where you are. Unlimited Talk+Text depends on who you call: calls and texts to 50 countries are included, from wherever you have service.

  • You can call German numbers from Japan at no cost, because Germany is one of the 50 countries.
  • Japan numbers on the ground are not among the 50 countries and are not included.
  • For destinations outside the 50 countries there is a Talk+Text Pass, which requires an active plan.
  • Since your data is unlimited, the easiest way to call locally is WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal.

Which country sits on which list is shown in the app under Coverage. Tap the country name at the top and the list shows Data and Talk+Text separately for each country.

Requirements

Your phone has to support eSIM and must not be locked to a particular provider. Look in your mobile or cellular settings for “Add eSIM” or “Add phone plan”. Most phones from the last few years have it. Simsalasim does not offer a plastic card as a fallback.
