In short: Both connect you to the network, and technically there is no difference in quality. An eSIM is built in, cannot get lost and is ready right away. The plastic card mainly wins on moving quickly between devices.

The difference in one sentence

A physical SIM is a plastic card you put into your phone. An eSIM is the same chip, only built in, and the plan profile is downloaded onto it. None of that changes the network, the speed or the quality of the connection.

Where the eSIM is better

  • Available instantly: you get the plan when you buy it, with no post and no waiting.
  • Nothing to break: no card to lose, snap, or get stuck in the wrong adapter.
  • Several profiles at once: personal and work, or main plan and travel plan, on one device.
  • Practical for travel: you set an overseas plan up from the sofa rather than at the arrival airport.
  • Less plastic: no card, no carrier sheet, no shipping.

Where the physical SIM is better

  • Changing device in seconds: card out, card in, done. With an eSIM that runs through the app or the provider.
  • Jumping to a spare phone: when the battery dies, a card is quickly moved across.
  • Older devices: phones without eSIM support only work with a card.

What to check

Two things decide whether an eSIM is an option for you. First, your phone has to support it: look in your mobile or cellular settings for “Add eSIM” or “Add phone plan”. Second, the device must not be locked to a provider, because a carrier-locked phone rejects another provider’s eSIM even when the technology is there.

If your phone cannot do eSIM, there is no workaround with Simsalasim: the plan runs entirely as an eSIM and there is no plastic card as an alternative. A plan you have already bought stays on your account, though, and can be used on a compatible phone later.

What this means for Simsalasim

Simsalasim works as an eSIM only, with no plastic card at all. You buy in the app, the profile is fetched, and the Activation Wizard does the rest. Your plan starts at the first network connection rather than at installation, so setting up costs nothing and you can do it calmly in advance.
