What is Simsalasim?
Simsalasim is a software company that does mobile. For €10 a month you get everything in one plan: unlimited data in 100 countries (Germany and 99 more countries when you travel) and Unlimited Talk+Text to 50 countries. Your data travels with you, with no roaming surcharge.
So for one price you get everything you’d usually need several plans and providers for.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is the digital version of a SIM card. The eSIM capability is already built into almost every modern phone by the manufacturer. So there’s nothing to insert by hand and no plastic card to get. You set up your Simsalasim plan right on the phone in a few clicks, and you’re usually ready in under a minute.
What’s the advantage of an eSIM over a physical SIM card?
An eSIM can’t get lost, snap, or end up in the wrong tray, because it’s already built into your phone by the manufacturer.
You get it digitally and right away, with no waiting for the mail or a trip to a store, and you’re ready in a few minutes. You can also keep several profiles on your phone and switch between them easily.
How does Simsalasim work?
You download the Simsalasim app, sign up for the plan, and you’re up and running in a minute or less. From then on you can call, text and use mobile data right away. You can call and text to 50 countries (Germany and 49 more), and use mobile data in 100 countries (Germany and 99 more countries when you travel).
When you travel abroad, your phone switches to a good local network by itself, with no settings to change and no extra roaming charges.
Which network does Simsalasim use?
In Germany you’re on the Telefónica network.
Abroad, Simsalasim connects you to good local partner networks. Your phone switches by itself, with no settings to change and no extra roaming charges.
How much does Simsalasim cost?
Simsalasim costs €10 a month, with no hidden fees and no long contract. You pay month to month and can cancel month to month just as easily.
If you travel to a country that isn’t one of the 100 included ones, you can add a Data Pass on top. The cost is shown to you transparently before you buy.
Which countries does Simsalasim work in?
With Simsalasim you get unlimited data in 100 countries. On top of that comes Unlimited Talk+Text to 50 countries: calls and texts to those destinations are included, wherever you happen to be. For trips to countries beyond those 100, Simsalasim offers Data Passes covering more than 140 countries, which you simply get whenever you need them.
What’s the difference between the plan and a Data Pass at Simsalasim?
The Simsalasim plan is your everyday phone plan, with unlimited data in 100 countries (Germany and 99 more countries when you travel) and Unlimited Talk+Text to 50 countries (Germany and 49 more countries) for €10 a month, and you keep it all the time.
A Data Pass is something you add only for a specific trip, when you’re going to a country that isn’t among the 100 included ones. The pass lasts only for the length of your trip, and afterwards your normal plan simply carries on.
What are Data Passes at Simsalasim?
Data Passes give you mobile data for trips outside the 100 countries included in the plan. Durations vary by pass, for example 7, 15 or 30 days. The countdown only starts when your phone first connects to a network there, so you can buy a pass well in advance.
What are Talk+Text Passes at Simsalasim?
With a Talk+Text Pass you call and text destinations outside the 50 countries in your plan. You simply choose the country. A Talk+Text Pass runs for 12 months.
A Talk+Text Pass requires an active plan: you can only buy and use one while your plan is running. Data Passes are independent of this and keep running for the duration you bought.
Can I keep my phone number with Simsalasim?
Yes, you can bring your number over for free. You keep the exact number you have today, and everyone keeps reaching you just as before. Because calls and texts are already part of the plan, Simsalasim becomes your normal main line.
Can I get a new number with Simsalasim or transfer my old one?
Yes, both are possible. When you sign up for the plan you choose: keep your existing number or get a new one.
If you pick a new number, there’s nothing else to do. If you want to keep your previous number, here’s how it works.
With “Keep your previous number” your plan starts right away on a temporary number, so you are reachable from the start.
Once the eSIM is active, a banner in the app opens Choose your number. You have three options there: transfer your previous number, keep the temporary one, or pick a new one.
A transfer needs the name of your previous provider, your previous number, your first and last name and your date of birth. These have to match your previous provider’s records exactly. They check within 5 to 10 business days, after which the app shows the date your number moves over. Until then the temporary number keeps working normally, and your plan, calls and data are unaffected.
Porting is free and possible if your current contract ends within the next 123 days (about 4 months) or ended no more than 80 days ago (about 2.5 months). Beyond that we set no deadline: you can keep the temporary number for good, or start the transfer of your previous number later from your profile. If your previous provider declines, the app names the reason and offers three routes: correct the details and try again, keep the temporary number, or choose a new one.
Does WhatsApp keep working with Simsalasim?
Yes, WhatsApp keeps working just like normal. If you keep your previous number, you do not have to change any settings in WhatsApp. If you choose a new number, you change the connected number in WhatsApp once (Settings, then Account, then Change number). Your chats and groups then move to the new number automatically.
Do my apps work with Simsalasim when I’m abroad?
Yes. In the 100 countries in your plan you have unlimited data, so all your apps keep working as normal: for example WhatsApp, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Instagram, TikTok, and you can keep using every other app just as before. You navigate, chat, and stream just like at home. For a country outside those 100, you add a Data Pass, and then your apps work there the same way.
How do I install Simsalasim?
- 1. Download the Simsalasim app from the App Store or Google Play.
- 2. Register, sign up for the plan, and pay right in the app.
- 3. You install the eSIM in a few clicks. Confirm it, and you’re online.
Which devices work with Simsalasim?
Simsalasim works on most newer eSIM smartphones from Apple, Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Sony, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, Huawei, Nokia, Fairphone, and Asus.
On iPhone it works from the iPhone XS and XR (both out since 2018) onward, and on all newer models that followed.
Your phone also needs to be unlocked, meaning not tied to one network (no SIM lock).
To check on iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then About, and look at “SIM lock” (it should say “No SIM restrictions”); on Android, if unsure, just ask your current provider. You’ll find the full list of supported devices on the Simsalasim devices page.
Does Simsalasim support 5G?
Yes, Simsalasim also works with both 4G and 5G. Wherever 5G is available, you browse on the 5G network. Where there’s no 5G yet, your phone connects on its own to the fastest network that’s available.
Can I switch networks with Simsalasim?
Simsalasim takes care of that for you. Your phone connects to a good local network by itself and switches when another one works better.
There is no manual network choice.
How much data do I need with Simsalasim?
On the Simsalasim plan your data is unlimited in 100 countries, so you never have to worry about running out. You only choose a data amount if you add a Data Pass for another country.
As a rough guide for that: around 1 GB a week is enough for messages and navigation, while daily browsing and social media is closer to 3 to 5 GB.
Can I add more travel data with Simsalasim?
In the 100 included countries you browse without limits. If you add a Data Pass beyond those and use up the data, you simply add another. This is called pass-stacking: the passes run independently and your data adds up.
- 1. Go to your passes in the app.
- 2. Choose the right Data Pass for the country or region.
- 3. Buy it. The new data adds to the data you already have.
Is Simsalasim’s data really unlimited?
Yes. In 100 countries (Germany and 99 more countries when you travel) you browse with no data limit. There is no throttling above a certain threshold and no hidden cap.
Your plan covers use on your phone, your smartwatch and of course tethering and hotspot.
Can I tether or use a hotspot with Simsalasim?
Yes. You can use your phone as a personal hotspot and bring a laptop, tablet or another device online.
The data comes out of your plan. There is no separate package, no extra cost and no separate hotspot allowance. Tethering has no data limit and no throttling either.
Can I cancel my Simsalasim plan?
Yes. You can cancel anytime, with no minimum contract term. You keep full access until the end of the current billing period. Here’s how to cancel:
- 1. Go to your plan in the app.
- 2. Choose “Cancel plan” and follow the short flow.
- 3. Confirm. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing cycle and can be undone until then.
What makes Simsalasim different from other providers?
Simsalasim gives you more for less than almost any other provider.
Many providers give you either a cheap plan just for home or an eSIM just for holidays, and you end up paying for the two separately.
With Simsalasim you get it all together for €10 a month: unlimited data in 100 countries and Unlimited Talk+Text to 50 countries, at home and away.
Other providers also tend to have a lot of fine print, so the product you think you are getting and the one you actually get are often far apart.
In Germany you’re on the very good Telefónica network, and abroad on many more networks. So it’s a single plan for home and away, at a price for which most providers give you much less, or you might even pay more.
